BORDER COMPOUNDING PHARMACY BECOMES ONE OF THE FIRST COMPOUNDING PHARMACIES IN AUSTRALIA TO ACHIEVE AN INTERNATIONAL QUALITY ACCREDITATION
Border Compounding Pharmacy proudly announces its achievement of PCAB Accreditation, a service of Accreditation Commission for Health Care, a US based health care accrediting organisation. The accreditation is awarded in recognition of the pharmacy’s commitment to exceeding national and international quality standards. This is not only a milestone in the Australian pharmacy arena, but also means the Albury Wodonga region now has a compounding pharmacy service of an internationally recognised calibre.
The making or compounding of drugs is an extremely technical and potentially risky task. The onus is essentially on the individual pharmacy to ensure they set and govern their own quality standards.
The United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) currently sets the benchmark for standards in pharmaceutical compounding. “It was a logical choice to find an accreditation organisation aligned with the standards set out in the USP,” said Ben Eshelby, an owner and Quality Officer for Border Compounding Pharmacy.
Accreditation is a process through which healthcare organisations demonstrate compliance with standards. PCAB Accreditation reflects an organisation’s dedication and commitment to meeting standards that facilitate a higher level of performance and patient care. PCAB accreditation for compounding pharmacies is recognised at an international level. “Border Compounding Pharmacy is committed to delivering the highest quality compounded medications,” said Lee McLoughlan, the other pharmacy owner. “By achieving PCAB Accreditation, our customers can be assured that our compounding pharmacy follows industry best practices and is in compliance with the most stringent national and international standards.”
Compounding is an integral part of the practice of pharmacy, and the demand for these customised medications increases every year. Compounded medications can be suggested by a pharmacist and are also commonly prescribed by doctors, veterinarians, and other healthcare providers. Compounded medications are prepared for an individual patient by a specially trained Pharmacist when a commercial product does not exist or is unavailable.
Established in 2007, PCAB was founded by eight leading pharmacy organizations in the United States to create voluntary quality accreditation designation for the compounding industry. The organization now promotes, develops, and maintains principles, policies, and standards for improving the quality of pharmacy compounding globally.
The process towards accreditation was tough and extremely difficult. According to Lee McLoughlan “It was an incredibly challenging journey, but when you have a fantastic team around you, anything is possible. The quality, service and advice you will receive from Border Compounding Pharmacy is now recognised as world class. This is not only rewarding for us but being one of the pioneers in the field, is wonderful for the Albury-Wodonga region. Once again we’ve shown Australia what its regional areas can do!”
